HR Bloggers Against The Censorship
Description: The new Internet bill has been approved and come into force. In terms of freedom of speech and data protection, the new law comprises some legal inconvenience.
Istanbul, Turkey, 06.03.2014 – With the new internet law signed; Mr. Abdullah Gul, Turkey’s president, has given the Turkish telecoms regulator (TİB) powers to demand that internet service providers bar access to web pages within four hours if they are deemed to infringe privacy. (18.02.2014)
HR Bloggers of Turkey declared a ‘free’ internet manifestation right after the law signed by the president. The repeal of this legislation is vital since it is against freedom of speech and privacy of personal data. Furthermore, it brings restriction to people’s freedom of information and their right to reach information. All these rights are among basic rights and freedom; restrictions of these rights are against the Turkish Constitution and European Convention of Human Rights.
Because of the protests the government made the revisions Gul demanded and the parliament passed the revised bill Thursday. “The New law requires decision to block a website to be sent to court within 24 hours, and the court is required to rule on the decision within next 48 hours” which is a bit smoothed. However, TIB has still broad authority to block the sites instantiating the right of privacy. (27.02.2014)
HR Bloggers thinks that limiting the Internet by the state via a law is a mobbing. With the law; Citizens of Turkey, systematically, shall be banished from the 21st century competencies that are commonly accepted. Such as; open communication, collaboration, innovation, entrepreneurship, diversity, sustainable development and continues learning.
Therefore, with full unity, we say “No” to Internet Regulation complying with neither Turkish constitution nor international norms. We are against all kinds of government favored interventions aimed at our common area and limiting human rights and liberties.
We will abide, to the fullest extent, by our desire to adopt the vision as to internet usage internalized by new generations, to trust each other and to proceed to the future with freedom by clinging to benefits of digital world.
